5 Ways to Prevent Cremation Jewelry From Rusting

Jewelry is something that should be taken care of. It is not just because they can be pricey but because they can be very valuable and meaningful for people. For example, owning a piece of cremation jewelry is very significant and preserving your loved one’s memory is your number one priority. You do not want it to be damaged in any way.

One of the common enemies of jewelry is rusting. Over time, you might see tarnish or rust on your bracelets, necklaces, earrings, or rings. However, if you’re not that careful with your accessories, tarnish and rust might show sooner.

These damages may be inevitable but you want to prevent them from happening for as long as possible. Here’s your guide to prevent your jewelry from rusting:

1. Avoid Wetting your Accessories

Rust is a result of when metals are oxidized. This usually happens when they get wet. It is advisable to remove any pieces before getting into the water. Rings are one of the usual victims of tarnish and rust because they always get wet. You’ll want to remove your cremation rings before washing your hands or the dishes.

Take the time to remove your accessories before taking a bath or going for a swim. Aside from water, you want to avoid other kinds of liquids on your jewelry like alcohol, chlorine, and bleach.

2. Store Them Properly

Don’t just leave your accessories out in the open. It’s best to store them in a closed container to prevent them from being exposed to air. It is recommended to keep them in an airtight non tarnished box. Avoid putting your jewelry in a cardboard box or any wooden material.

Put each piece in a polyethylene or Mylar bag to have another layer of protection. This will prevent the pieces from rubbing on each other which can result in additional damage.

3. Clean Them Regularly

Cleaning your earrings, necklace, or bracelets might not be something that you think of doing but you should. Cleaning them would remove any chemicals or dirt that can cause tarnish and rust.

Be mindful of what type of cleaner you use by tailoring it to the accessories’ metal type. Be gentle and use a soft-bristled brush and cotton cloth when cleaning.

4. Wear Them Last

When getting ready to go out, it’s best to wear your pieces of jewelry at the end. Go take a shower, put on some clothes, and wear your make-up, lotion, and perfume first before wearing your earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings. This way you avoid getting any liquids or chemicals on your jewelry.

5. Put a Protective Coating

It wouldn’t hurt to put a protective coating to fight against the elements. You can buy specific protective products for jewelry or use alternatives. You can use a sealant spray or clear nail lacquer to coat your accessories. Make sure to hang them to dry before using or storing them.

Protect Your Jewelry

Learning how to protect your jewelry is the first step to being able to prevent them from getting damaged. By avoiding exposure to elements such as water, air, and dirt, you’ll be able to prevent rust and tarnish and preserve this memorabilia.
